Lost your keys in Las Vegas? Retrace your steps for 10 minutes, then decide whether they are lost or stolen. Lockouts run $48 to $230, a home rekey $48 to $300, and a new car key $129 to $330, typically within 30 minutes in East Las Vegas.
The right response depends on what was on the ring and whether anything with it points to your address. This guide walks through house keys, car keys, apartment keys, and hotel key cards, what each one costs to fix, and how to make sure a lost key cannot be used against you.
The First 15 Minutes
- Retrace, once. Check pockets, the car seat gap, the last restaurant or store, and the top of the car if you set them down while loading. Call the last two places you were; most bars and casinos on the resort corridor hold lost keys at security for weeks.
- Decide: lost or stolen. Keys that vanished from a bag, a gym locker, or a car break-in are stolen. Keys that fell out somewhere are lost. Stolen keys get the full treatment below; lost keys with nothing identifying on them are lower risk.
- Check what else was on the ring. A tag with your address, a garage remote, a mailbox key, or a work badge changes the plan. A garage remote with a registration in the car is as good as a house key.

Lost House Key
If the key is truly lost with nothing on it that identifies where it fits, you can reasonably wait and cut a new copy from a spare. If a copy exists with a neighbor or family member, have it duplicated the same day so you are not down to one.
If you cannot rule out that someone has the key and knows your address, rekey. Rekeying keeps your existing locks and changes the pins so the lost key no longer works; it does not require replacing hardware. Lost Car Key
This is the call we get most from the parking garages along the resort corridor, the UNLV lots, and Henderson shopping centers. What happens next depends on the key:
- Older plain metal key (no chip). Cut by code from the VIN or by decoding the door lock. Fast and at the low end of the range.
- Transponder key. The chip must be programmed to the car. A mobile locksmith cuts and programs it at your location, $129 to $330 for most Toyota, Honda, Ford, Chevrolet, Nissan, Hyundai, and Kia models, no tow.
- Smart key or push-to-start fob. Programmed with a diagnostic tool at the car. Usually the top of the range; some European models need dealer-only parts and we tell you that on the phone rather than on site.
- All keys lost. The car has no key to copy, so the locksmith generates one from the lock and programs it. Same $129 to $330 range, and importantly the old key can be erased from the immobilizer so a stolen key will not start the car.

Lost Apartment or Rental Key
Tell the property manager the same day. Most Las Vegas leases make the tenant responsible for lost keys and set a fee for a replacement or a rekey; after-hours lockout charges from the office are often higher than a locksmith. Around UNLV, in Paradise, and in the larger communities off Flamingo and Tropicana, many offices will not rekey until business hours, so if you are locked out at night a locksmith is the practical route. For a house rental or a room in a shared home, ask the owner whether they want a rekey or just a new copy. If a roommate’s key is the one missing, one rekey covers everyone, and every roommate should get a new key at the same visit.
Lost Hotel or Resort Key Card
Go to the front desk with photo ID. Every Strip and Downtown property deactivates the old card and issues a new one in a few minutes; there is nothing a locksmith needs to do. If the card was in a wallet with your ID and room number, ask security to note it, and if you feel unsafe ask for a room change. For a car parked in a resort garage with keys lost inside the hotel, that is an automotive lockout; the garage will not open your car for you.
Stolen Keys: Do These the Same Day

- File a police report with Las Vegas Metro or Henderson PD. Insurance and some landlords require the report number, and it documents the date if the key is ever used.
- Erase the old car key from the immobilizer. When we program a replacement, we can delete the missing key so it will no longer start the car. If the car itself was stolen with the key, the report comes first.
- Reprogram garage remotes and change gate codes. A stolen remote is a stolen key to the garage; clear the opener’s memory and re-pair the remotes you still have.
- Change mailbox and work keys. A community mailbox key goes through the post office or HOA; a work key goes to your building manager.
How to Avoid the Next Lost Key
- Put a Bluetooth tracker on the ring. A lost ring in a casino or on a trail at Sunrise Mountain is easy to find with one.
- Keep a spare house key with a trusted neighbor or in a wall-mounted lockbox with a code, not under a mat or planter.
- Keep a spare car key at home. A duplicate cut and programmed while you still have a working key is far cheaper than an all-keys-lost job.
- Never put your address on a key tag. A phone number is fine.
- Consider a keypad deadbolt on the main door so a lost key is a nuisance, not an emergency.
