Locksmith rekeying a deadbolt cylinder with new pins at a Las Vegas home

What Is a Rekey? Understanding the Basics

A rekey changes the pins inside your existing lock so a new key works and every old key stops working. In Las Vegas, 24/7 Locksmith 4U rekeys most locks in one visit for $48 to $300 depending on the door count, and arrival in East Las Vegas is typically 30 minutes or less.

You keep the same deadbolt, the same handle, and the same look on the door. What changes is the key. That makes rekeying the right first move after a move-in, a lost key, a tenant turnover, or a breakup, and it is usually the cheapest way to take back control of who can open your door.

What Rekeying a Lock Actually Means

Every pin tumbler lock (the standard deadbolt or knob lock from Schlage, Kwikset, Yale, and most other brands) holds a row of five or six small pins inside the cylinder. Your key has cuts of different depths that push those pins to exactly the right height so the cylinder can turn. A different key pushes them to the wrong heights and the lock stays put.

Rekeying swaps those pins for a new set that matches a new key. The locksmith pulls the cylinder, removes the old pins, loads pins cut to the new key, reassembles it, and tests it. The old key no longer lines up, so it is useless from that moment on.

Rekey vs. changing the lock

Changing a lock means removing the whole unit and installing new hardware. That is the right call when the lock is worn, damaged, low quality, or when you want a different style or a smart lock. Rekeying is the right call when the hardware is fine and only the key needs to change. On a typical Las Vegas house with three to five exterior doors, rekeying is often half the price of replacing everything.

Question Rekey Replace

Typical price per door Lower Higher (hardware plus labor)

What a Rekey Costs in Las Vegas

These are typical ranges for 24/7 Locksmith 4U jobs in East Las Vegas, Henderson, Sunrise Manor, Whitney, and Paradise. A $29 service fee covers the visit, and you approve the exact quote before any work begins. The final number depends on how many cylinders we rekey and the lock brand.

Job Typical price Typical time on site
One deadbolt or knob lock $48 to $90 15 to 20 minutes
Apartment or condo (1 to 2 doors) $48 to $120 20 to 40 minutes
House, 3 to 5 exterior doors, keyed alike $120 to $300 45 to 90 minutes
Extra keys cut on site A few dollars each for standard blanks Done during the visit
High security or restricted keyway (Medeco and similar) Quoted per cylinder Varies

Two things push a rekey toward the top of the range: mixed brands on one house (a Schlage front door and Kwikset side doors cannot share one key without changing a cylinder), and locks so gummed up with desert dust that they need cleaning before they can be pinned. Both are common on older homes near Boulder Highway and in Sunrise Manor. Our residential locksmith page lists the full price sheet for home services.

When You Should Rekey

Moving into a new home or rental

The previous owner, their relatives, the cleaning crew, the agent, and the contractor who fixed the water heater may all still have a key. Rekey on move-in day, before the furniture arrives. For a Henderson or East Las Vegas house with a front door, garage entry door, and back slider lock, expect 45 to 90 minutes and one new key that runs every door.

Tenant turnover

Las Vegas apartment communities and single-family rentals turn over constantly, and a lease ending does not guarantee every copy of the key came back. Property managers around UNLV, Whitney, and the Paradise corridor rekey between tenants as a rule. Rekeying costs far less than replacing hardware on every unit, and it can be done the same day the unit is vacated. Our commercial locksmith team handles multi-unit rekeys and master key setups for managers.

Lost or stolen keys

If a key ring that includes your house key goes missing, especially with anything that identifies your address, rekey the same day. A lost key with no address on it is lower risk but still worth fixing if you cannot account for it. We cover the full response in our guide on what to do after losing your keys in Las Vegas.

Roommate, partner, or employee leaves

Any time someone who had legitimate access no longer should, rekey. Asking for the key back does not help if a copy was made at a hardware store kiosk months ago.

Too many keys for one house

Many homes we visit have a separate key for the front door, the side gate, the garage entry door, and the back door. Rekeying all of them to one key (keyed alike) is one of the most popular requests we get from East Las Vegas homeowners, and it happens during the same visit.

After a break-in or attempted break-in

If a burglar had access to a key, or the lock was picked or bumped, rekey at minimum. If the door or strike plate was damaged, that becomes a repair or replacement job instead.

How the Rekey Visit Works

  1. Proof of ownership. Our technician verifies your ID and that you have the right to change the locks on that address. Tenants need permission from the landlord or property manager.
  2. Inspection. The technician checks each lock for wear, misaligned strike plates, and dust buildup. Locks that are failing get flagged before any money is spent rekeying them.
  3. Cylinder removal and repinning. Each cylinder comes out, the old pins are replaced with a new pin set, and the cylinder is reinstalled. Modern Kwikset SmartKey locks can be reset with a tool instead of repinning, which is faster.
  4. Keys cut on site. We cut the new keys from the truck, so you leave with as many copies as you need.
  5. Testing. Every door is tested from both sides with every new key, and every old key is confirmed dead.

Can You Rekey a Lock Yourself?

Kwikset SmartKey locks can be rekeyed with the small reset tool that came in the box, as long as you still have a working key. For any other pin tumbler lock you need a pinning kit for that specific brand, a follower, tweezers, and a steady hand. Hardware store rekey kits exist but only cover one brand each, and a dropped spring or a wrong pin can lock you out of your own house.

For a single Kwikset with the reset tool on hand, do it yourself. For a whole house, mixed brands, or any lock you depend on, having a locksmith do it in one visit is usually worth the difference, and it comes with keys cut on site and every lock tested.

Rekeying Special Cases

Smart locks and keypad locks

Most smart deadbolts still have a mechanical key override, and that cylinder can be rekeyed like any other. Codes and app users are separate and should be changed at the same time. Our guide on resetting keyless entry locks walks through the code side brand by brand.

Car locks

Vehicle door and ignition locks can be rekeyed too, but the process differs from house locks because of transponder chips and wafer locks. That is an automotive locksmith job with its own price range.

Heat and dust

Las Vegas summer heat does not damage pins, but the fine dust that blows in off the desert does. Locks on doors that face the wind, especially on homes near Boulder Highway and along the east edge of Sunrise Manor, collect grit that makes keys stiff. We clean the cylinder during a rekey so the new key turns smoothly.

Rekey FAQ

How much does it cost to rekey a house in Las Vegas?

A typical house with three to five exterior doors runs $120 to $300 with 24/7 Locksmith 4U, including the $29 service fee and new keys cut on site. A single lock is $48 to $90. Mixed brands or locks that need cleaning land toward the top of the range.

How long does rekeying take?

One lock takes about 15 to 20 minutes. A whole house with three to five doors takes 45 to 90 minutes including cutting keys and testing every door. Kwikset SmartKey locks are faster because they reset with a tool instead of new pins.

Is rekeying as secure as replacing the lock?

Yes, as far as the key goes. A rekeyed lock is exactly as hard to pick or force as it was before, and old keys are dead. If the lock itself is a low grade or worn, replacement with a Grade 1 or Grade 2 deadbolt is the upgrade, and rekeying will not fix that.

Can all my doors be rekeyed to one key?

Yes, if the locks share a keyway, which usually means the same brand. Kwikset locks can be keyed alike with other Kwikset locks, and Schlage with Schlage. If your doors mix brands, one cylinder can be swapped so everything runs on a single key.

Can a renter rekey an apartment?

Only with the landlord’s or property manager’s permission, and most Las Vegas leases require you to hand over a copy of the new key. Ask first; many managers will arrange the rekey themselves between tenants.

Do I need the old key to rekey a lock?

No. A locksmith can remove the cylinder and repin it without the original key. The one exception is a Kwikset SmartKey reset, which needs a working key; without one, the cylinder is rekeyed the traditional way or replaced.
